For men in Norwich who want to learn a practical skill and meet people along the way, Norwich Men’s Shed offers a shared workshop with a purpose beyond the finished object.

Members can work on their own projects, help with community commissions and pass on what they know to fellow makers.

The charity describes its main activities as woodworking and woodturning, with the range of skills shaped by the people who join.

A reason to get together

The Shed was established by Norfolk charity MensCraft in 2013 and became an independent charitable incorporated organisation in 2017.

It describes tackling social isolation and loneliness as part of its purpose, through a place where men can make things and socialise.

A published account from Dan, who says he joined in 2022, gives that idea a practical shape.

He brought experience in leatherworking but wanted to develop his woodworking and meet people at the same time.

In his account on the Shed’s website, Dan recalls that an early lesson covered how to hold the wood before starting work.

He also describes wanting to learn more advanced joinery and possibly share his leatherworking skills with others.

It is a useful glimpse of the exchange behind the workshop: someone can arrive with something to learn and something to offer.

Beginners have a place

Membership is open to men aged 18 and over, including complete beginners, DIY enthusiasts, hobbyists and experienced makers.

The published membership fee is £20 a month for one three-hour workshop session each week, although some activities cost extra.

Members also help with the running and maintenance of the Shed.

Access to machinery comes with a safety requirement: members must demonstrate that they can use it safely, including an induction for each machine.

Skills that reach beyond the workbench

The workshop’s activity includes projects for the wider community as well as members’ own making.

The Shed says it sometimes accepts small making or mending commissions, with availability depending on members’ skills and work already agreed.

These are paid services, with income helping to cover running costs, and there may be a waiting list.

Anyone offering tools or materials should contact the charity first so it can check whether the donation is useful.

Start with a conversation

Prospective members are asked to arrange a tour so someone is available to show them around and explain the application process.

Email [email protected] or call the workshop on 07536 183837 to enquire.

Ask about current session times, membership availability, fees and any access requirements before arranging a visit.

For a Norwich man wondering where to begin, that first conversation could be the starting point for learning a skill in company.
